Deodar Cedar - Cedrus deodara
Native to the Himalayas. Its name was derived from the Sanskrit* word 'devadara', meaning tree of the gods. It was shortened to the common Indian name 'deodar'. It has short sharp bluish-yellow-green needles on stout woody branches. They normally grow from 40 to 60 feet. When left untrimmed the branches droop at the tips. In Asia the wood is used for lumber and in ancient Egypt it was used to make coffins for mummies. They grow slow, are difficult to propagate and are in very limited supply at our farm.
